Occam's Razor

‘Occam’s razor’ is a principle by which, between two equally valid theories, the simpler one is preferred. This reflects how matter behaves at a fundamental level, seeking equilibrium through the most efficient form, often a sphere. In 3D modelling, however, spheres are rendered as polygons with very high vertex counts instead. The programs which render these virtual objects, do this to achieve the desired outcome via the simplest solution.
This installation features a silent 3-channel video where philosophical and mathematical symbology blends with contemporary gaming culture, virtual spaces, and internet phenomena like Zalgo Text. The video begins with a familiar ‘loading screen’ which hints at the activation of a universal consciousness, reminiscent of the origins of organic matter in Earth’s deep oceans 4 billion years ago. The piece explores the fragility, improbability, and inevitability of life, both in the distant past and in potential future timelines, whilst questioning the very structure of the very reality in which this takes place.
