Nocturnalia

installation concept sketch

2019

SHIFT, Cardiff (UK)

"Sara Christova captures moments within the mist and buzz of the night. Light on bodies as they move through the club. Light through a window pane as you smoke a cigarette. These beautiful illustrations join us on a journey through Japan, Taiwan and Korea."

Night culture has long been at the forefront of avant-garde arts practice and the aesthetic and atmosphere of club culture has informed and inspired creative activity, individual and collective action where inhibitions and expectations are deconstructed, revealing a platform for free expression, experimentation, participation and play. Under the Counter Culture is an immersive, site responsive, multimedia programme presented by art collective tactileBOSCH, celebrating the interconnection between art and night culture. UTCC takes place across multiple venues presenting exhibitions, events, performances, screenings and participatory workshops.

Nocturnalia is  a painting installation developed after a series of illustrations, both commissioned for Under the Counter Culture, a curatorial project by art collective tactileBOSCH, which included live events and exhibitions across the UK, Taiwan, Japan and South Korea. For the international part of the project, Christova produced six illustrations which interpret different stages of a partygoer's experience through a night out.  Later that year, she completed a short production residency at SHIFT Cardiff, directly before the culminating group exhibition of Under the Counter Culture (7 Oct 2019 – 1 Dec 2019, The Old Vicarage, Cardiff), where she created a 14-metre painting which echoes the fragmentation, sensory saturation, increasing inebriation and ultimately non-linear experience of a night out. The painting was exhibited using three coloured floodlights, making different parts of the image stand out as the lights shift from colour to colour. Shown as a circle at eye-level, the painting invited viewers to conceptually enter the abstracted scene inside the painting, while their moving shadows, become part of the composition itself.
