Unfolding is a series of painting objects centred around the reconfiguration of a 2D painting into a 3D object. While de- and reconstruction play an important part, this project's main focus lies in the exploration of approaches to expanded painting and how adhocism can inform the creative process.
Included are three distinct iterations, The Sphinx, The Girl and Ashes.
The first painting object is directly inspired by Christova's 2021 painting Hunting Wisdom. The ideas behind the painting are rather allegorical––criticism of man’s insatiable hunger for knowledge and power, as well as lamentation for nature in the current climate crisis; an overall commentary on the tragic inevitability of the future caused by the cruelty of our past. The painting features the mythological sphinx as an allegory for knowledge (wisdom), presented in a critical state of extinction through the violence (hunt) our own species.
The reconfigured painting object is a twisted simulacrum of these notions. These core elements of the original painting echo in the resulting painting object, and these new forms suggest the existence of a larger narrative, tracing the subjects through context, space and time.
Hunting Wisdom was originally featured in Simulacrum (2021), a solo showcase of paintings made by Christova in 2020 and 2021. It was also recently featured at Sofia Art Week 8: Genderfication (15 - 19 October 2025, Doza Gallery, Sofia, Bulgaria), curated by Voin de Voin.
