a ghost that haunts the night

video, sound, spoken word

2023

IKELCTIK, London

Alter egos, avatars and meta-selves permeate a multiverse of digital, intellectual, and imaginary spaces; endlessly self-translating and self-transmuting between realms and modes of existence.

The video's narrative unravels and reconfigures the notions of self and cross-dimensional perception, as its main character (the Sun) enters our human scope of being in a manner similar to when we (humans) enter virtual reality. The recurring scenes of hands turning and twisting throughout the video allude to the instinctive gesture of looking at one's own hands when calibrating a VR headset, an action that becomes a symbolic anchor of embodiment as one transitions between dimensions.

A poetic monologue originally only featured as subtitles, then developed as spoken word, "translates" the video's soundtrack which was compiled using NASA recordings of the Sun. The words seek to untether the anthropomorphic entity from the confines of matter, focusing instead on the multidimensional awareness (mind) whose reach transcends the limits of space and time. The words spoken throughout the piece flow as a visceral undercurrent alongside the abstracted visual narrative, amplifying the virtual dissonance between the ‘identity’, and the ‘manifestation’. Finally, the title of this piece is a direct but incomplete quote of the final sentence of Tai Shani's book 'The Neon Hieroglyph' (Strange Attractor Press, 2022) which served as one of the driving inspirations for the development of this project:

You didn't believe me when I told you, the sun is a ghost that haunts the night.
