Volcanic gravel in the configuration of an evaporated ocean floor, the fragile spectres leaking from the cracks of a liquid crystal display, copper crystals taking over touchscreen devices, the glitchy crackle of a geiger counter
LOCUS SOLUS is a speculation on the post-organic stage of our planetary timeline. Presented somewhat as a future museum diorama, the installation features contextually charged matter transformed by imagined geological entropy and the indisputable touch of the proverbial human hand. Referring to a ‘unique’ or ‘solitary’ place, LOCUS SOLUS imagines how the freeform exploitation of Earth’s resources might ripple through an uncertain future. Dealing with complex ideas around posthumanism and systems theory, the project invites macrospective reflection through direct sensory references to the geopolitical conditions of our extended present.
This is a project which incorporates three distinct bodies of works—Amorphic Sequence of a Place in Time (2024), Occam's Razor (2024), and TRISTESSE (Fallout at the Soft Rocks) (2024).
LOCUS SOLUS was first presented as Christova's MA graduate project at the Royal College of Art. It was then selected as the winning project in the Installation/Sculpture category of the Global Creative Graduate Showcase 2024 held by Arts Thread, and featured on Google Arts and Culture. The project was recently evolved into LOCUS SOLUS 2.0 (2025), a new site-specific iteration for which Christova won the Special Jury Award at BUNA Vol.3: Discovery and Otherness in the Age of 5.0 (2025).
