Amorphic Sequence of a Place in Time

oil and acrylic on canvas, 290x170cm (diptych)

2024

London, UK

Amorphic Sequence of a Place in Time is about an intimate approach to relativity, perspective and an experience of time beyond the human-centric, it is about allowing moments to morph into particles, entangled, endless, resonating.

As a visual exploration of the perception of time, the processes by which this painting was made each engage with a heightened awareness of locality and temporality. Initiated as an exercise in psychogeography (dérive) in and around Battersea Park, Christova recorded a series of short "stillness" videos at the specific locations of more fluid perception, resulting in a composite video in which all of the gathered footage is overlaid and played as one, expounding the theory of relativity by which all of time occurs simultaneously. The final painting is captured slowly, stroke by stroke, from the looped projection of the composite video over the canvas.

Recreating this process, the second edition of this work is based on the city of Beijing. From long historic walks around the Forbidden City, its surrounding hutongs, and many days in which air pollution turned the sky a warm, gentle shade of grey, an extended series of experiences and contexts become reflected through the primary colours in use, evolving them instead into ‘local primaries’. With Payne’s Grey replacing Black, and a linen chosen over the cotton, the (non-toxic contemporary variants) ancient shades of Malachite Green, Han Blue, Cinnabar and Royal Yellow come alive on the canvas, alluding to both antiquity and present day.

Amorphic Sequence of a Place in Time was first presented at  RCA2024 as part of Christova's graduate project (20-23 June 2024Royal College of Art, London, UK). Since then it has been showcased in One Extended Meditation (17-20 October 2024, Copeland Gallery, London, UK) presented by FURIES Collective.

The second edition of the series was made during Christova's residency in Beijing with Elsewhere Culture and Dulwich College Beijing, and exhibited at Fractured Continuum (9 March - 30 April 2025Sound Art Museum, Beijing, China).
