Occam's Razor
3-channel video (8min 20s), gaming monitors,
steel frame, sand, volcanic gravel.

Royal College of Art
This installation features a silent 3-channel video where philosophical and mathematical symbology blends with contemporary gaming culture, virtual spaces, and deep time.
‘Occam’s razor’ is a principle by which, between two equally valid theories, the simpler one is preferred. This reflects how matter behaves at a fundamental level, seeking equilibrium through the most efficient form, often spherical. In 3D modelling, however, spheres are rendered as polygons with very high vertex counts instead. The programs which render these virtual objects, do this to achieve the desired outcome in the simplest possible way. This contrast in the method toward simplicity is what sits at the core of this project, explores the fragility, improbability, and inevitability of life, both in the distant past and in potential future timelines, whilst questioning the very structure of the very reality in which this takes place.
As the video begins with a familiar program loading screen it hints at the activation of a universal consciousness, reminiscent of the origins of organic matter in Earth’s deep oceans 4 billion years ago. Instead of offering didactic answers, the work dwells in ambiguity, letting entropy and emergence define its narrative arc. In this way, this project aligns with Hal Foster’s caution against over-identification with the Other—rather than simulate alterity, it stages its conditions of possibility. Often shown alongside Ether Nets (2024+), the woven cable sculptures, reminiscent of both neural and folk craft systems, embody the tension between connection and fragmentation, tradition and posthuman drift.
Occam's Razor was conceived as part of LOCUS SOLUS (2024), Christova's MA graduate project at the Royal College of Art. This piece has been presented in a variety of configurations in London-based exhibitions, and most recently featured in LOCUS SOLUS 2.0 (2025), presented at Buna Vol.3: Discovery and Otherness in the Age of 5.0.
