elastic equilibrium
(mechanics)
The condition of an elastic body in which each volume element of the body is in equilibrium under the combined effect of elastic stresses and externally applied body forces.
As a way to extend ongoing research on opposing colour values and the level greyness in the moment of perfect equilibrium (see Mutable Values), these works involve two projections showing a simultaneous opposing colour inversion over 5 minutes. Halfway through the experiment the projections appear identical but only for a split moment. Then we, the viewers experience a delicate tension of visual expectation only to realise that as we anticipate the peak moment of slow inversion, it comes and goes as quietly as every other.
Each of the three iterations of the installation—'concurrence', 'tension' , and 'composite truth, after James Turrell'—explores notions of balance, symmetry, and tension, both within the work itself, and extending into the space it occupies, as well as the viewers themselves.
